Very unorganized. The staff was not friendly nor helpful. Bad experience.
A friend and I stayed while backpacking across Europe and it looked like a lot of others were doing the same. The hostel itself us a relatively standard hostel with either dorms or private rooms (which btw are private dorms with 2 made up beds instead of bunks). The hostel seemed to get a lot of business from groups which are usually placed on the 2nd floor and as expected this floor is very loud and chaotic any time of the day. The hostel has a very small terrace bar on that floor but while we were there it was constantly swamped by a large group so everyone else stayed away. The staff seemed to be fairly new and so were quite slow and originally sent us to a room that already had people in it (we had hired a twin private room) and after 30 mins they manages to issue another key. The main downside though is the area it is in, the immediate compound is very seedy with sex shops and dodgy food stalls. The area across the road was a building site which had some shops around it and
We were 4 nights in this hostel and it was a disaster ! It was near the underground but it was so near that when you open the windows you're on the rails ! You can hear everything, the train, the voices announcing the train, super ! So you don't want open the windows but you die because it's too hot ! Ok the room is cheap but you've to pay for everything : dishes, sheets, towel, internet and there is no lock for the locker, you've to buy it and it's 5 euros ! There is a kitchen but the fridge is awful and cherry on the cake there is no respect here, someone stole our things 2 times, 15€ !!! The room : it was not so good as we expected, one of the bed was broken, the bathroom was dirty and there was no carpet for 8 people... There was a cleaning lady but it was really minimal ! Just the center of the room has been cleaned ! There is a terrace but it closed at 22h !! We have met a lot of strange people, a lot of underage people too and they were running and screaming all the night !
Arrived in this morning but couldn't check in till 3PM, that's normal. Reception area is always crowded and only one receptionist on duty. people usually crowded around the desk, 15 min wait common. I could put my luggage in storage room and my laptop in a safe, ok. They charge for things most hostels don't: shampoo, soap, internet access. Sign says you can buy internet access from either receptionist or bartender. Went to the bar, guy behind the counter had no idea, he had just started work that week, so i had to wait for the receptionist. But baristo made me a nice cappucino. 1 hr of wireless = 1 euro. 2 hrs = 1.5 euro. (For your own device, using their terminals is more.) After one hour I wanted to add another hour for another 50 cents. No, I had to buy 2 hours new, for 1.50 euros. another wait to buy the additional access from the desk. I couldn't log on to 2 devices at once (laptop & iPhone), had to log out of one before logging into the other. The main lobby is no-smoking,
A&O Hostel at the Zoologische Garten was a major disappointment after the very good A&O Leipzig. The room was poorly finished (although the separate bathroom pod was very good). The walls are very thin, I could easily the neighbour clearing his throat and he wasn't doing it loudly. The place is rundown, the lobby/bar is very noisy, a young woman at reception was cold and impatient when I checked in. All that would have been OK, but the kids loudly playing football in the corridors at 11pm, followed the next night by a huge school group upstairs thumping on the floor was too much. They should pull it down and start again.
